Why Folders in Confluence are a Big Deal!
At first glance, folders in Confluence might seem like a basic feature addition. And to some extent, that's true, since creating and deleting folders is straightforward. But let's take a closer look at our Confluence space and page tree. What we often find are numerous pages with little to no content, often used only to house a "children page" macro, basically serving as a hack for the missing folder functionality. But now, all that changes since folders are here to stay.
At first glance, it might seem like it doesn’t matter whether you use a page or a folder to group your content. However, there are three key reasons why folders are the better choice:
Visual Clarity: Folders stand out visually in the page tree, making it easier for readers to quickly identify actual content pages versus folders that only serve the purpose of grouping content.
Improved Searchability: Unlike pages, folders don’t appear in search results. This helps declutter your search results by eliminating empty parent pages that aren’t relevant to what you’re looking for. For even more tips on improved searchability, check out our best practices article.
Streamlined Simplicity: While parent pages can hold content themselves, folders are purely containers. Using folders keeps your space clean and focused by grouping content without adding unnecessary pages for readers to sift through.
As you can see, replacing those empty parent pages with folders is actually worth the effort. And, lucky for you, it might not even be that much effort change it. Currently in beta, Confluence will provide an easy way to convert parent pages to folders with the click of a button! This feature can help you clean up your spaces by quickly replacing unnecessary pages with folders.
We look forward to see how folders will change the game of organization in Confluence. Do you have any questions? Let us know! We’d love to discuss it with you.
