Let's dive in!

Psychological Safety Meets Confluence

Atlassian recently published an article that highlights the importance of psychological safety in the workplace, a concept originally introduced by Harvard professor Amy Edmondson in the late 1990s. It’s the idea that people can take risks, share their thoughts, and make mistakes without fear of negative consequences. So how is this important in the work environment? When people feel safe, they’re more likely to contribute fully, leading to better team performance and creativity.

At K15t, we find this important for the same reasons. We understand that when our team members feel safe, they are more likely to engage fully and contribute to our collective success.

We strive to cultivate this safety through an open culture that encourages knowledge sharing, supported by tools like Confluence. Confluence plays a significant role by providing a platform where knowledge is easily accessible and where team members can collaborate freely, thus reinforcing a culture of transparency and trust.

Contributor safety is one of the four factors of psychological safety, according to Dr. Timothy R Clark. It’s when teammates feel safe to offer meaningful contributions. How does that translate to us at K15t?

Encouraging Open Communication: Contributor safety is closely tied to open communication, a strong value of ours. When team members feel comfortable to express themselves, ask questions, and give feedback, it creates a space where people are more likely to contribute. We promote this by cultivating an open culture that thrives on knowledge sharing. By using Confluence as our sole platform, we ensure a single source of truth for everyone.

Reducing Fear of Failure: One of our values at K15t is “safe to fail.” We see this working well when employees understand that mistakes are a part of the learning process, making them more willing to take on challenges. This approach ensures that contributors feel secure in experimenting and taking risks, knowing they will be supported and not penalized if things don’t go as planned.

Protecting Mental Health: Contributor safety also involves protecting employees’ mental health. A psychologically safe environment reduces stress, anxiety, and burnout, as employees do not have to constantly worry about how they are perceived or whether their jobs are at risk. To further support mental health, K15t offers multiple resources, such as consulting programs and workshops.

Overcoming Challenges

Creating and maintaining a psychologically safe environment is an ongoing challenge that we haven’t perfected ourselves. Like many organizations, we continually work to improve our practices to ensure every team member feels included and valued. One way we use Confluence to support this is by maintaining open feedback pages accessible to everyone. We encourage dialogue, actively seek opinions, and ensure our leadership models behaviors that promote a safe and supportive workplace. It’s a never-ending process but one that’s well worth the effort. We hope our insights can inspire your team.
